Nato nel 1957 a Salgotarjan in Ungheria, Ferenc Snétberger ha dal 1988 la cittadinanza tedesca. Di etnia Sinti/Rom, ha iniziato a suonare la chitarra prestissimo. Da adolescente ha studiato chitarra classica e più tardi ha frequentato l’Accademia Ferenc Liszt di Budapest dove ha seguito i corsi di chitarra jazz, adattando le tecniche brasiliane e spagnole al suo modo di suonare. Con la sua passione per il tango, la musica indiana, Egberto Gismonti, Jim Hall e Johann Sebastian Bach, Snétberger è una delle poche voci veramente originali nel campo della chitarra contemporanea, un virtuoso pioniere di rara maestria.
I suoi brani solistici senza accompagnamento sono degli eleganti omaggi alla Spagna e all’America del Sud, in cui la sua fantasia d’improvvisatore si unisce ad una perfetta tecnica classica.
Naturale complemento della band “Great Guitars” negli ultimi anni di Charlie Byrd e ospite sempre benvenuto all’Accademia Musicale di Budapest, Snétberger appare spesso anche in contesti musicali di sapore etnico.
Ha registrato una serie di album e ha suonato in Ungheria, Jugoslavia, Finlandia, Francia, Italia, Spagna, Germania, India ed altri paesi. Ha inoltre preso parte a molte trasmissioni radiotelevisive e ha suonato come solista in grandi formazioni. Sul palcoscenico ha collaborato con artisti quali Didier Lockwood, Anthony Jackson, James Moody, David Friedman, Dhafer Youssef e Pat Metheny.

“In Memoria della Mia Gente” è il titolo della sua prima composizione per chitarra e orchestra, nata 1995 su suggerimento di un compositore che viveva in Israele e che aveva chiesto a musicisti di tutto il mondo di scrivere un pezzo in occasione del 50° anniversario della fine dell’Olocausto. Dedicato alla memoria del suo popolo – i Rom e i Sinti – il concerto di Snétberger è una vitale affermazione contro la sofferenza umana e si ispira alle melodie piene di sentimento della tradizione gitana.
Esiste poco repertorio per chitarra e orchestra (Vivaldi, Rodrigo): il concerto in tre movimenti per chitarra e orchestra di Snétberger è diverso, soprattutto perché la parte solistica è solo un canovaccio su cui si può improvvisare liberamente anche in un contesto classico. Snétberger è stato invitato ad eseguire questo concerto con orchestre da camera in Ungheria e Germania. Ha scritto anche dei brani musicali per Pralipe, teatro mobile del popolo Rom.

Nel 2004 Snétberger fonda il suo nuovo trio con il leggendario bassista norvegese Arild Andersen ed il batterista / percussionista italiano Paolo Vinaccia.

Con naturale facilità ed ad livello i  tre scelgono di riunire composizioni, competenze tecniche, unità, fantasia eimprovvisazione. Esce nell’autunno 2005, il loro album di debutto "Nomad" che è stato accolto con entusiasmo dalla critica e dal pubblico.

Nello stesso anno Snétberger suona con Bobby McFerrin al Summer Festival di Veszprém (Ungheria) dove è stato registrato il DVD "Snétberger Live" (solo /duo con McFerrin /trio "Nomad").

Nell’ estate 2007 Snétberger è stato invitato da McFerrin per altri due concerti in Germania e in Spagna.

Snétberger ha iniziato la collaborazione con Markus Stockhausen nel 1999 con "Landscapes”, una suite in duo registrata per l'album di Snétberger "For my people».

“Streams”, uscito nel 2007, è la più fresca testimonianza di questo fantastico duo. La tecnica e la sicurezza di Snétberger sulle corde è fenomenale, il suono e la ricerca dell’inusuale di Stockhausen  sono incredibili. Due musicisti per molti aspetti diversi tra loro che invece si incontrano in un progetto artistico acclamato …che sia proprio la loro diversità a rendere la combinazione così interessante?

Born in 1957 in northern Hungary, guitarist/composer Ferenc Snétberger was the youngest son of a family of musicians. Early on his father, a guitar player also, became his role model. Snétberger studied classical music and jazz guitar. Today he is best known for his art of improvising and his crossing of stylistic borders. His music is inspired by the Roma tradition of his home country, Brazilian music and flamenco as well as classical guitar playing and jazz. He made numerous albums as a leader, co-leader and sideman and has toured all over Europe as well as Japan, Korea, India and the United States
In 1995 he composed his Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra, "In Memory of My People", on the occasion the fiftieth year following the end of the holocaust. Inspired by melodies of the gypsy tradition, the concerto is a powerful statement against human suffering. It has been performed by the composer himself with chamber orchestras in Hungary, Italy and Germany and also at the New York UN headquarters (International Holocaust Memorial Day, 2007).
Ferenc Snétberger performed Luciano Berio's Sequenza XI (for solo guitar) as well as concertos with orchestra by Vivaldi, Rodrigo, and John McLaughlin. He also wrote music for film and theater. On stage he performed with David Friedman, Dhafer Youssef, James Moody, Trilok Gurtu, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Bobby McFerrin and others. In 2002 Snétberger was appointed freeman of his birth town and two years later received the Hungarian Order of Merit. In 2005 he was awarded the Liszt Ferenc Prize in Budapest.
In 2004 Snétberger founded his new trio with legendary Norwegian bass player Arild Andersen and Norway-based Italian drummer/percussionist Paolo Vinaccia. With natural ease and on the highest level the three of them bring together choice compositions, technical skills, improvisational drive and musical fantasy. Released in fall 2005, their debut album "Nomad" was greeted with enthusiasm by critics and listeners.
In the same year Snétberger's performance with Bobby McFerrin at the Veszprém summer festival (Hungary) was recorded for the DVD "Snétberger live" (solo / duo with McFerrin / trio "Nomad"). In summer 2007 Snétberger was invited by McFerrin for further duo concerts in Germany and Spain.
Snétberger's cooperation with Markus Stockhausen started in 1999 with "Landscapes", a duo suite recorded for Snétbergers album "For My People". In three movements the musicians immediately create a language of their own showing their talents in an amazing way.

Eight years later during which Snétberger and Stockhausen have further been stimulating each other artistically, their duo album "Streams" finally proves their development.
